Fourth Meeting of Polish Art Historians and Restorers of Oriental Works of Art, organized by the Section of Oriental Art, Nicolaus Copernicus University (in Polish); organizers: Prof. Jerzy Malinowski and Mirosława Wojtczak. First debate over the establishing of the Polish Society of Oriental Art.

Meeting in Torun, preceding the founding assembly of the Polish Society of Oriental Art, – discussions about a draft statute.

December, 2nd

Founding meeting of the Polish Society of Oriental Art – a resolution was passed to found the Section, adopt its statute and create its units in Kraków, Łódź, Toruń and Warsaw. A Board of the Society was also elected, the list being as follows: President – Prof. Jerzy Malinowski (NCU), Vice-President for Cooperation with Museums, Cultural Institutions and Associations – Dr. Joanna Wasilewska (Asia and Pacific Museum, Warsaw), Vice-President for Restoration Matters – Dr. Weronika Liszewska (Academy of Fine Arts, Warsaw), Secretary – Anna Pawlak (National Museum, Warsaw), Treasurer – Magdalena Furmanik (NCU), Board Member, Commissioner for Members’ Matters – Prof. Dr. Tomasz Ważny (NCU), Board Member, Commissioner for Studies of African Art and Other Extra-European Cultural Circles – Dr. Aneta Pawłowska (University of Łódź). Application submitted for the registration of the Society in the National Court Register.

March, 12th

Participation of Prof. Jerzy Malinowski and Dr. Weronika Liszewska in the 2nd SOM Preparatory Meeting for 3rd ASEM Culture Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, held in Wroclaw.

April, 2nd

Registration of the Society in the National Court Register.

May, 8th

Founding meeting of the Torun Branch. The Board elected, its members being as follows: President – Dorota Kamińska, Ph.D. (NCU), Vice-Presidents – Prof. Dr. Swietłana Czerwonnaja (NCU) and Dr. Anna Nadolska-Styczyńska (NCU), Secretary – Dr. Katarzyna Lewandowska-Michalska, Treasurer – Mirosława Wojtczak (NCU).

Founding meeting of the Krakow Branch, temporary represented by Dr. Beata Biedrońska-Słota (National Museum in Krakow).

June, 2nd

Founding meeting of the Warsaw Branch and the First General Meeting of the PSOA. Second Conference of the Society: Cultures of Africa, in Polish, organized at the Faculty of Fine Arts of NCU, in cooperation with the Section of Oriental Art NCU, Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology NCU, and Oriental Culture Circle by NCU; organizers: Dr. Anna Nadolska-Styczyńska and Małgorzata Baka-Theis.

The conference was accompanied by the Festival of African Cultures, including an exposition of photographs by Jolanta Koziorowska (State Ethnographical Museum in Warsaw) Pictures from Mali, African dances show and Ethnographical Films Festival Frames from Africa (coordinator: Małgorzata Baka-Theis).

First Seminar of Jewish Arts in the Jewish Historical Institute.

Foundation of the Branch of Jewish and Israeli Arts, with Dr. Renata Piątkowska (MHPJ) appointed its president and Dr. Małgorzata Stolarska-Fronia (MHPJ) as her deputy.

October, 15th–22nd

Dr. Agnieszka Helman-Ważny in China at the invitation of the Office of the National Ancient Books Preservation Center of China in Beijing. Within the scope of the training program for Chinese restorers of works of art she conducted a workshop on Western techniques of paper conservation and their application to the restoration of Tibetan books.

November, 6th

First Scientific Meeting of the Krakow Branch in the New Building of the National Museum.

November, 16th

Visit and lecture by an anthropologist of culture, Prof. Dr. Mihaly Hoppal, Director of the Institute of Ethnology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest, President of the International Society for Shamanic Research.

Third Conference of the Society: Art of China (first international in English and Polish), held at the State Ethnographical Museum in Warsaw; organizers: Dr. Joanna Wasilewska and Anna Pawlak.

Founding of the Section of Central- and South-American Arts at the Second Scientific Meeting of the Warsaw Branch held at the Asian Gallery – division of the Asia and Pacific Museum; Dr. Ewa Kubiak (University of Łódź) appointed its head.

April, 18th–19th

Fourth Conference of the Society: Art and Visual Culture of India (international in English and Polish), in cooperation with the Chair of South Asian Studies, Warsaw University, held at the Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities; organizers: Prof. Dr. Piotr Balcerowicz, (Warsaw University) and Prof. Jerzy Malinowski, Dr. Dorota Kamińska (NCU) and Agnieszka Staszczyk (NCU).

The Conference was accompanied by the Festival of Indian Art and Culture, including film festival Good Indian Cinema, Festival of Classic Indian Dance (shows by Rajyashree Ramesh with the group, Aleksandra Wachacz and Magdalena Niernsee-Durbacz); organizer: Prof. Piotr Balcerowicz.

April, 21st–24th

Dr. Weronika Liszewska participated in the Polish delegation headed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage to the 3rd ASEM Culture Ministers’ Meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

Fifth Conference of the Society: Christian Art in the Borderlands of Asia, Africa and Europe (international, in English), organized with the Chair of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Art, Cardinal Wyszyński University, held at the Capuchin Cloister at Zakroczym; organizers: Prof. Waldemar Deluga and Magdalena Tarnowska (Jewish Historical Institute).

Sixth Conference of the Society: First Congress of Jewish Art in Poland – Jewish Artists and Central-Eastern Europe, the 19th to WWII (international, in English), organized in Kazimierz on the Vistula River, in cooperation with the Section of Oriental Art of NCU, Museum of the History of Polish Jews, Jewish Historical Institute and Museum in Kazimierz on the Vistula River, held at the former Synagogue and Celejowska House; organizers: Prof. Jerzy Malinowski, Dr. Małgorzata Stolarska-Fronia and Magdalena Furmanik-Kowalska.

The Congress was accompanied by the exhibition The Paintings of the Polish Jews from the Private Collection, organized by the Museum at Kazimierz on the Vistula River (prepared by Dr. Waldemar Odorowski).

Tenth Conference of the Society: Poland – China. Art and Cultural Heritage. First Conference of Polish and Chinese Historians of Art, organized in cooperation with the Center of Chinese Language and Culture “Confucius Institute” of the Jagiellonian University, and with the Tsinghua University in Beijing, and Shanghai University in Collegium Maius in Krakow. Organizers: prof. Jerzy Malinowski, Magdalena Furmanik-Kowalska and dr. Bogdan Zemanek (Jagellonian University).

Twelve Conference of the Society: Art of the Armenian diaspora, organized in cooperation  with the  Chair of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Art, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University. Organizers: Prof. Waldemar Deluga. The conference was accompanied by the exhibition Ars Armeniaca. Sztuka ormiańska ze zbiorów polskich i ukraińskich  (Ars Armeniaca. Armenian Art  from Polish and Ukrainian  collections) in the  Zamość Museum (prepared under the direction of Prof. Deluga).

Conference: Akira Kurosawa - Japanese cinema from Western perspective organized in cooperation with the Institute of Politology and the Department of History of Modern Art NCU in Toruń. Organizer: Dr. Marcin Lisiecki and  Joanna Zaremba-Penk.
